Welcome

Welcome to the Woodcote Millennium Green Trust website.

The Woodcote Millennium Green is the only one in Surrey. It comprises an area between the Woodcote Green Estate and Woodcote Green Road at the rear of Epsom General Hospital, originally part of the estate of the Manor of Epsom which was owned by Chertsey Abbey prior to the dissolution of the lesser monasteries in 1536.

Woodcote House at the rear of the Millennium Green was acquired by Sir Edward Northey in the late 17th century and became the family seat to the Northey family for 250 years. The present house dates mainly from the early nineteenth century.

In 1939 Woodcote House and the surrounding land was sold to Earnest Gabriel Harwood. Part of this area was developed for housing as The Woodcote Green Estate, and the house was subdivided into flats which have recently been refurbished.

In 1999 the Harwood family donated a large portion of the remaining woodland including the pond to be held in perpetuity by the Trustees of the Woodcote Millennium Green Trust. The Mayor of Epsom and Ewell officially opened this area, now known as The Woodcote Millennium Green in July 2000.

The Woodcote Millennium Green Pond

We have now reached our target of £10,000 for the pond refurbishment.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this project, without your generosity the pond would simply have disappeared altogether.

We hope to have the pond refurbished by the end of March this year if the contractor is available.

Our plans for the Pond Clearance

Despite our best endeavours, the invasive aquatic weed in our pond has now grown out of control. We have taken advice and unfortunately it is very difficult to completely remove the weed and may even be impossible. We are concerned that we are going to lose the pond completely unless we have professional help and that is why we are now trying to raise funds to have the pond restored. As you are probably aware, the pond dates back over 100 years so we feel it is an important feature to retain.

Our initial priorities are to:

  • Cut back the surrounding area close to the pond and kept clear of saplings / overhanging branches which will to reduce leaf fall into the pond
  • Temporarily reduce water level of pond – to improve access for restoration work
  • Silt & vegetation excavation, including removal of the invasive weed and aquatic waste
  • Make good any damage around the pond and re seed where necessary

Once the above work has been carried out our future plans include:

  • Monitoring the depth of the water and if necessary Install a liner for the pond to replace existing clay lining

Our Preventative Maintenance plan moving forward will include:

  • Controlling of the weeds, reeds, bull rushes, lilies etc by removing any excess from the pond.
  • The surrounding area close to the pond will need to be kept clear of saplings and over hanging branches to reduce leaf fall into the pond which will keep the silting up of the pond to a minimum.
  • Remove leaves, sludge and other debris from bottom of the pond, this reduces debris build up in the pond.
  • Promptly remove any unwanted plants in the pond.
  • Remove anything unwanted that has been dumped in the pond.

If you need any further information or would like to discuss please do get in touch.
